Meet Howard Johnson, Project Manager of Admissions Plus Pro

This month, we would like to introduce you to Howard Johnson - not the hotel guy, but someone much cooler and more interesting. Howard is our Project Manager of Admissions Plus Pro, Senior Software Demonstrator and Rediker Software’s in-house Art Curator. Meet Howard Johnson

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

Howard: I grew up in a suburb of Buffalo where I learned to shovel snow.   I received my BA in Physics from the University of Rochester and my MEd in School Administration from the University of Maine, Orono.  I have two daughters, four adorable grandchildren and a lovely wife who puts up with me on a daily basis. My dog Chester is my baby and often keeps me company at work and on weekend motorcycle rides.

What did you do before coming to Rediker Software?

Howard: I was a high school Physics teacher for many years with various stints as a carpenter and owner of a computer store. Because no one told me not to, I then spent 10 years as a high school principal. My last position was at Mt. Abram High School, a Rediker Software customer near Sugarloaf Mountain in western Maine.

How did you come to work at Rediker?

Howard: I called for tech support one day in January of 2000 and got Peter James, then Vice President of Rediker Software (now retired). After helping me, Peter listened to me whine about a parent who was unhappy with me. He told me to think about coming to work for Rediker Software and claimed that no one would ever yell at me. After another difficult parent meeting two months later, I called back and asked if Rediker was serious about the job offer. Peter said yes and I have been here ever since.

What do you do at Rediker Software?

Howard: I am the project manager for Admissions Plus Pro, which is our admissions and enrollment management solution with online applications. I was in charge of the creation of the program and now continue the development of new features. I work with Admissions Directors from around the world to ensure that we keep pace with the needs of Admissions offices. I also show our software to schools looking to automate or increase efficiency over their present software.

What sets Admissions Plus Pro apart from the competition?

Howard: We got it right. Our team developed the program during and after extensive research with Admissions Directors. We made detailed lists of school needs and spent a great deal of time developing a system to directly meet those needs. Using all of our resources to design the data base and configuration system, we came up with a method of assisting admission personnel that is both easy to use and very thorough.

What’s next for Admissions Plus Pro?

Howard: Our browser based grade book and parent portal have proven to be so successful that we are developing the same technology for Admissions Plus Pro. Although a release date has not yet been set, we look forward to testing it this winter.

What do you like most about your job?

Howard: Many people my age have retired from jobs for which they had a marginal affinity. I get up every morning and look forward to coming to work. I enjoy being a part of a company culture that values innovation and customer service. I enjoy the challenge of learning new software and ways to adapt what we have to the ever changing needs of schools.   I also really enjoy the company of the people with whom I work.

Can you share an interesting fact about yourself?

Howard:I started and ran a construction company in the 1970’s that specialized in building large and small residential domes on the coast of Maine. Some of our work can be seen in an out of print book titled Dome Builder’s Handbook 2 from Running Press.
